Week 3 Blog: College

I know that I want to go to college. I'm not sure where, but I have looked at several schools with great nursing and exercise science programs.
To become a Nurse Practitioner, I have to complete a 4-year degree program in nursing or a nursing related field and aim to take and pass the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses. However, a NP does not have to become a registered nurse, but it is helpful in finding work during additional study. After the 4-year degree, I will need to complete a master's degree program that trains Nurse Practitioners to get a Nurse Practitioner Degree, which will take 2-4 years.
When I go to college, I will major in Nursing or a related health care field, such as exercise science or kinesiology. I plan on minoring in Spanish and Women, Gender, & Ethnic Studies.
There aren't really different jobs for Nurse Practitioners. NP's can work in different fields, from OB/GYN to Critical Care and in different environments like clinics, hospitals, private practices, and a variety of other care practices. The average NP in states that employ the most nurse practitioners make between 90-115 thousand dollars a year: California - $98,970, New York - $97,730, Florida - $86,840, Texas - $97,710, Massachusetts -$102,340. The top five states with the pay by highest annual mean are Alaska, Hawaii, Oregon, Massachusetts, and New Jersey.
According to healthcareers.com, employers look for NPs with high mental and physical endurance, with outstanding communication skills that are caring, patient, and encouraging. Additionally, it is said that NPs should be compassionate, ethical, empathetic, detail-oriented, adaptive, confident, committed, and strong critical thinkers.
