There are so many different options for study that I find it very hard to limit myself to only one, however for the purposes of this exercise I will choose biology to major in.
Three common jobs that biology majors have are:
- Surgeon: the average pay is around $166,000 per year before taxes. The amount that a surgeon makes depends on a multitude of factors: what hospital they are working at, how long they have been a surgeon, and where they are located. surgeons in California and along the East Coast seem to make quite a bit more money averaging around 180,000 dollars a year. While surgeons practicing in the Southern and Central United States tend to be closer to around 140,000 dollars a year. Personalities types for surgeons usually tend to be very patient, inquisitive, calm, and usually include a concern for people. In order to become a surgeon you will need to complete a doctorate as well as an undergraduate degree.
- Biology High school teacher: the average pay can range between 33,856 and 53,526 dollars per year. The highest paid biology teachers seem to be in California or New York. I think that really anyone could become a teacher however the most successful teachers are the ones who are patient, knowledgeable, and fair. In order to become a Biology teacher you will need to obtain a bachelors degree and have a teaching credential.
- Research associate, Biotechnology: The average pay is around 50,526 dollars per year. The pay varies a lot however this doesn't seem to have anything to do with the location of the job. It seems like it pertains to the experience level of the job holder. Bio-technicians have to be very meticulous and detail oriented, as well as patient. The minimum amount of education you need is at least a bachelors degree, however in order to advance in the field you will need more education up to a doctorate.
Robyn, it seems that even if science is a big part of the jobs you have research they are completely different. I am in similar type of situation. I wonder how are you going to be able to chose the right career for yourself?
ReplyDeleteSounds like a long road! I don't know if I'm able to go through medical school but I would just want you to ponder the idea of medical school and decide if you want to go to school and push through all the student loans that many people need to go to medical school.
