This week I was very diligent at my internship. I did not complain about any of the work I was asked to do and I did the work quickly. An example of this was filing. I filed a large stack of documents correctly and quickly and my supervisor was very pleased. This lead to her trusting me with more work and less supervision later on in the week. I started working on company documents and calling businesses on behalf of the Sausalito Chamber of Commerce, which was much more interesting than filing.
I communicated all issues I had at work very well this week. Every time I was confused by something, I would ask. I would also talk to my supervisor discussing any issues after completing a task. An example of this occurred while I was gathering information for Tourist packets. My supervisor gave me a list of businesses to call and verify information for, but a for a few of them the lines were dead. At first I assumed the businesses were closed, but when I turned in the information that I gathered I made sure my supervisor knew that for a couple of the businesses the phone lines went dead. She reviewed the information and told me that a couple of the numbers that I was given were incorrect, and so I was able to call these businesses and include their information in the tourist packets, rather than exclude them because I thought they were closed.
While working on this very same task of gathering information, I ran into a problem and a weakness of mine. My supervisor could not read my handwriting. This made it so I had to go over everything I wrote down with her, one step at a time, and this really slowed down work at the office. Not only this, but messy handwriting makes me seem sloppy and as if I don't care about the work being done at the office. It makes it seem as if I am not "literate" enough for office work. I will have to be sure to write neater next week.
It's good that you were able to get your first task done so efficiently. Doing things diligently shows your supervisor that you are competent and trustworthy enough to be assigned more challenging and interesting jobs (which is clearly what happened)! As far as writing, I too sometimes write illegibly. Writing neatly is a valuable skill to have that will serve you both inside and outside of the workplace.
ReplyDeleteI sometimes have a problem with communicating the issues that come up with me. Sometimes I don't tell my boss if I don't know how to do something and that makes the job a lot harder for me. Its good that you don't have this problem.
